Our best, or at least most enduring, relationships are pockmarked by conflict. This is not to be lamented. It is only through conflict that a relationship can move beyond the superficial. Of course, sometimes hate is just hate. That’s why so many relationships are destroyed by conflict. Far more than are enriched by it. Go figure.
*I pretend that the things I do matter. I suspect, strongly suspect, other people do likewise. What would happen if we had an amnesty and agreed to come clean about our sham lives? Nothing. Nothing would happen. We’d all just kind of shrug and then get back to pretending. I mean, what choice do we have really? I mean really really.
*Those of us who have not been trained in a professional discipline must take it on faith that those who have know what they are doing. Without such faith it is impossible to function in the world. Unfortunately, those who know what they are doing are often indistinguishable from those who don’t.
*Non-duality is just a slight tilt of how you frame reality, not special in any way, and frankly a bit disappointing. In other words, whether you see it for what it is or not, you will still occupy your self-limiting niche of reality, with all its neurotic idiosyncrasies.
*My mum dinned into me the notion that my detractors were motivated by jealousy. This was, of course, a ridiculous thing to teach a child. Nonetheless, the oldest lessons run deepest. Which is why, precisely why, my go-to theory of mind is always jealousy. Just as it has always been my mum’s.
*I am the least sorted-out person I know. Admittedly, I don’t know a lot of people, but for me this signifies something important. Not because I am not sorted out, but because I don’t actually give a damn. I mean, I am still alive, I have committed no crimes, excepting minor misdemeanours naturally, I am solvent (or at least my wife is solvent), in what way therefore am I not an upstanding citizen? So, I am not sorted out, so what?
